Can Acrylic Paint Be Used as Nail Polish?

Can Acrylic Paint Be Used as Nail Polish?

Some of the most beautiful art we see comes from acrylic paint. But did you now you can also use acrylic paint in other art forms? You’ll be happy to hear that you can use non-toxic acrylic paint as nail polish. This is neat because the possibilities are endless! We will go over all the basics in this article so you can start painting your nails in a fun new way.

As with any nail polish, you want to start with a clear base on your nail, and then proceed in applying the color. Acrylic paint is so rich in color that a lot of famous people and artists use it on their nails. It almost gives it a one of a kind look, especially if you’re adding your own touch of creativity.

I highly recommend this Arteza Acrylic Set, for your nails. Their colors are extremely vibrant and long lasting. The Morovan Acrylic Nail Kit is also a great option that’s affordable.

The cool thing is that acrylic paint dries super fast so you won’t need to wait as long as regular nail polish, and it’s water based so if you mess up, it won’t be hard to take off. When I’ve tried this in the past, it even came off with water. Of course that was before I applied the last step of the clear coat to protect the color, and keep it from chipping.

With that said, not only do you want to apply a clear coat on your nail for protection, but because acrylic paint will dry in a matte looking way, you might want to add a clear coat on top so it remains glossy. If you choose not to apply the clear coat, you risk the paint chipping or washing off easily.

Did you know a lot of nail artists actually use acrylic paint and paintbrushes to do nail art? Acrylic paintbrushes are so unique because they offer a variety of shapes and sizes that benefit a nail artist, especially for those flower or more intrigue designs. In another article, I cover everything you need to know about acrylic paintbrushes, and you might find some useful information that can work for your nail art as well.

Will Acrylic Paint Damage My Nails?

Now that you know you can use acrylic paint as nail polish, you might be wondering if it will actually damage your nails. Well because acrylic paint is water based and most are non toxic, no it will not damage your nails. Just make sure to apply a clear base on your nails so the paint doesn’t stain your nails.

To remove your acrylic nail color, just use regular nail polish remover, or even acetone. I have been using acetone lately on most of my colors just because it is easier and quicker to take off.

Can You Mix Acrylic Paint with Nail Polish?

Yes, you can mix various colors of nail polish to create a custom color, and you can mix water based acrylic paints for that custom color and then apply it on top of a nail polish base coat and top it with a good top coat to seal it in.

You can also find acrylic nail kits that are specifically designed nails.

But you cannot mix nail polish and acrylic paint together, the chemical structure is completely different and the water in the paint will coagulate the nail polish.

A neat thing about mixing your own acrylic nail color is that there’s s many unique colors that you can basically create your own colors and tones to your liking. I have made some really awesome colors in the past and I must say, they were some of my favorite nail colors to wear. I would mix and create a custom color with acrylic paint and then store in in small jars or containers for next time.

Nowadays, people mostly use acrylic paint as nail polish to get a vibrant color on their nails, and because it dries so fast, it’s pretty convenient. Not only that, but nail techs do those cool designs and nail art that you see with acrylic paint.

Another option you have is using acrylic paint pens to make neat designs on your nails. You can use this over your regular nail polish and base, or simply with the acrylic paint you used as the color. I love this idea because you get those fine lines and very tiny dots some designs have, with no problems.
